There’s much more to development than just making your website “working” code. Anyone can throw together a website, but it takes skill to build one that’s fast, secure, and one that can withstand new features.

We’ve had our fair share of bugs over the years. Some bugs have been easy to spot and have, sometimes, required a break from the issue in order to find the cause. The best approach for a bug like that is to remove all of the assumptions you’ve made about what the issue can be and should instead be done on a test site. The fix is likely to be much simpler than you expect it to be.

And good development continues after launch. Unfortunately, a lot of businesses seem to treat their websites as if it was a single project and forget about it once it’s done. These businesses usually wonder why their customers have left after five years of neglect. It’s in your company’s best interest to have a growing website that adapts with your business. If your competitors have something you don’t, your customers will go there instead.

Security should be your top priority. If your site is neglected and not monitored, it’s just a matter of time before you run into a lot bigger issues than losing your spot in search rankings. Users will be able to tell if your code is poorly maintained and will lose trust in your product. Focus on fundamentals and quality code first, then the rest (design, marketing, daily operation, etc.) becomes effortless.
